Welcome to the Rainy Season

October 29, 2015

“Rain, rainRain 5, go away. Come again another day”. This is the start to a popular nursery rhyme that is thought to have originated around the 17th Century.  Many of us can sympathize with this age old sentiment. While there are some silver linings to the rain, when the wet season hits most of our summer activities and plans go to the wayside. It’s not that we don’t like green plants and healthy levels of water to drink – just a few of the benefits that come with rain, rather, it’s that once the rain starts we realize everything we want to do that has to be put off for six months. No more outdoor sports, gardening, shorts and tank tops, calm evening walks, or exterior home maintenance projects.

Rain 4Except, that isn’t entirely true. Just because the rain has started, it doesn’t mean your opportunity for keeping your roof up to snuff has passed. It’s true that not everything on your roof can be done in the rain, such as cedar shake roof treatments (which need multiple days of dry weather) and some repairs that would expose the interior. However, here in the beautiful pacific northwest we are not often plagued with days upon days of torrential downpours, but more frequently we experience the drizzle, the mist, and the on again off again rain. There are many things that can still be done in these “light rains” so common to us. Such as composition roof cleaning, composition roof treatment, some repairs that won’t expose the interior, pipe-flashing and pipe-seal repairs, gutter cleaning, and more! Now you might be asking “What about when we do get a heavy rain?” The answer is this, while most things would need to be postponed until the heavy rain stopped, usually only pushing them out a couple days, there are still a few things that can be done, like pressure washing tile roofs (Logically – you are already drenching the roof in water, a little more from Mother Nature won’t hurt it!).

Now, if you are like I was before I started working for a roofing company, half of these terms make no sense and you are still left with confusion as to whether your roof project can be done in the rain or if you should wait until spring. Don’t worry, that brings me to something else that does NOT stop when it starts raining –  estimates. Our consultants aren’t made of sugar, though they are all very nice, and they are still more than happy to get on your roof and give you a professional opinion of what’s going on and what should be done, even when it’s raining! So while yes, the rain might mean no more shirtless runs or bare foot soccer, it doesn’t have to put a damper on your roof project. You can still keep your home and roof healthy!
