Spring Cleaning

dreamstime_s_29300632-300x199Spring Cleaning. We’ve all heard of it. To some of us it’s a figment of people’s imagination, something that is talked about but that we’ve never actually taken part of. For others it’s something we take very seriously, from purging out our closets to scrubbing the grout in the bathroom with a toothbrush. One thing that shouldn’t be overlooked, no matter your spring cleaning style, is the roof. There are a wide variety of excuses and thoughts people have on spring cleaning of roofs, and I want to address just a few of those for you.

1) “My roof doesn’t have any problems yet so I shouldn’t waste money on it.”

Your roof may not have problems now, but I can almost guarantee you that if you forego regular maintenance your roof WILL have problems in the future. While regular maintenance doesn’t promise you won’t get leaks or damage due to weather or old age, it can help avoid preventable damage. Damage that’s caused by water intruding through loose shingles, or build up of moss deteriorating the roofing material, shortening the life of the roof, etc… So yes, it might be hard to cough up the cash for a “non-existent” problem, but it will be lot harder when you have to pay twice as much for an extensive repair that could have been avoided.

2) “ I should probably wait until summer when the weather is nicer.”

Ah, the weather. Especially for those of us here in the beautiful Pacific Northwest we know the woes of rain 9 out of 12 months a year. Yes, moss treatments will probably be more effective not done in the torrential downpours. No, they do not require full sun for multiple days. In fact, even when applied in a light rain shower or when it rains the next day, we are still confident enough in our moss treatments that we will generally warranty them for a year! (This means if ANY new moss growth occurs we will come back out and re-treat your roof at no charge to you.) So do you actually need to wait until summer because of weather? Probably not, it’s up to you, but we can clean your roof just as well now as we will be able to in summer. So don’t let that hesitation be the only thing that stops you!

3) “I’m going to get my smaller outdoor projects done before I address the bigger project of my roof.”

I can not emphasize enough that you should get your roof done BEFORE you get any other exterior projects done. Let me explain. The roof is above the rest of your exterior. This means that, since we have a lovely friend named gravity, when you clean your roof, all of that moss and debris that is currently on the roof will in turn be on everything that isn’t the roof. While our roof maintenance technicians do their best to be careful with where the moss falls, and clean up as much as they can afterwards, they can’t guarantee a 100% clean up. We can rinse windows off, but can’t give them that professional sparkle. We can get all the big chunks of moss out of your garden, but we can’t get each little speck out of your freshly laid bark dust. So when trying to think of the order to get things done, a good rule of thumb is start at the top and work your way down! This way ensures that you aren’t having to double up on any of the tasks and in the end you are left with satisfactory results!

4) “I don’t know what I’m getting into, and roofers just seem so shifty.”

Unfortunately that is a reputation that many roofing professionals have earned, in some cases rightfully so. That doesn’t mean you have to forego taking care of your roof all together though.

  • Trust your gut, if you don’t feel right about someone don’t go with their company.
  • Calm your fears from the beginning, I’m talking that first phone contact, if you have questions or just want to know more about the company, ASK! A reputable company will be willing to talk with you and help you understand what to expect on your roof.
  • Get an estimate. Don’t blindly have a company do the work. Get an estimate detailing what will be done, and look at the estimate before you approve it. If you have any questions about what is on the estimate get them answered BEFORE they begin the work. This will help ensure you aren’t caught by surprise and that you and the roofers are on the same page and both happy in the end.

So there it is, just some of the reasons you SHOULDN’T forget to include your roof in you SPRING cleaning process!

If you are ready to get an estimate or find out more information feel free to give us here at Northwest Roof Maintenance a call! 360-910-8938 OR 503-740-4808. We will provide you with a free roof inspection and estimate!
